The polio virus is spreading out across the Newyork state.
Health officials say the polio virus has been seen in sewage samples in and around New York City, which threatens to cause paralysis.
Because of this, the Governor of New York has declared a state of emergency in the city due to the fear of polio, the virus is believed to have spread throughout the state.
It has been learned from the information that only one case with the virus has been reported.Polio was largely eradicated by vaccination in 1955 and America was declared completely free of polio in 1979.
Due to low vaccination rates in some New York states, New York officials believe that a state of emergency should be declared to increase vaccination rates, the main purpose of the declaration of emergency on September 9 is to increase the rate of flangic vaccination.
Polio is a disease in which muscle weakness and paralysis occurs, this disease mostly affects children, due to which it is also the cause of disability and death in children. There is no cure for polio but we can prevent it through vaccination from the general public and our understanding, its virus usually makes the muscles of the body weak and very fragile, which reduces the immunity of the body and the person paralyzed with polio.
According to the New York State Department of Health, it is imperative to increase vaccination very rapidly. Currently the vaccination average in New York is about 79 %, but the vaccination target will have to be increased from 79% to more than 90%, only then the state of New York is free from polio again.
To fight the polio virus, Dr. Mary Bassett, the health commissioner there, has said in her statement that “in polio we cannot just roll the dice if you or your child is not vaccinated or not vaccinated then there is a chance of getting paralysis. The threat will become realistically possible”. And he has also said that “one person with polio can infect hundreds of others”.
Officials have started monitoring sewage in the state due to the polio virus. The first case in New York was reported in 2013 and suffered from paralysis. The case was also genetically linked to polio from a sewage sample collected in August from Nassau County.
Sewage samples from Orange County, Sullivan County and 5 other New York City boroughs have found positive samples of paralyzing polio.
The state of emergency declared by Governor Cathy Hochul is the third emergency order this year, similar to what was done during the coronavirus pandemic and monkeypox.
